About LiveWhere

What LiveWhere is

LiveWhere is a free cost of living comparison platform covering every county in the United States. We bring together official government data on rent, taxes, utilities, healthcare, earnings and more, and present it in a clear, accessible format that helps people understand what it really costs to live in any part of the country.

Whether you are considering a move, negotiating a salary, researching housing markets, or writing about regional economics, LiveWhere gives you the numbers you need in one place.

What we cover

LiveWhere publishes detailed cost of living profiles for all 3,144 US counties and county equivalents, 51 state summaries, and side-by-side comparisons between any two areas. Each profile includes rent by bedroom count, household income and individual earnings, home values and property taxes, energy costs, healthcare premiums, state and local tax rates, transportation costs, and estimated monthly living costs for singles, couples, and families.

Where our data comes from

Every figure on LiveWhere comes from official US government sources. Our primary data sources include the U.S. Census Bureau (American Community Survey), the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD Fair Market Rents), the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Tax Foundation. We do not use crowdsourced data, user submissions, or estimates from private companies as primary sources.

For a complete list of every data source we use, see our data sources page. For details on how we calculate monthly cost estimates and rankings, see our methodology.

What LiveWhere does not do

LiveWhere is a data presentation platform. It is not a financial advisory service, and nothing on this site constitutes financial, tax, legal, insurance, or healthcare advice.

We do not recommend where you should live, whether you should rent or buy, how you should invest, or which insurance plan you should choose. We present official government data as clearly as we can and leave the decisions to you.

Tax calculations shown on this site are estimates based on standard rates and deductions. They do not account for individual deductions, credits, exemptions, or other personal circumstances. Consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your situation.

Healthcare cost figures shown are ACA marketplace benchmark premiums and do not reflect employer-sponsored coverage, Medicare, Medicaid, or individual health factors. Consult a licensed insurance professional for plan-specific guidance.
